Squeezing the Oleo
By Barbara Radisavljevic of Barb's People Builders
I was born in 1943, during World War II. When I was small, I often was called upon to help my mother in the kitchen. I seem to remember that some things were rationed, and butter was one of them. So one of the things I often had to help with was squeezing the Oleo. The dairy industry had managed to stifle the competition margarine was starting to provide, but many consumers did not like margarine because it was so pale in comparison to butter. The dairy industry wanted to keep it that way. It had managed to push through legislation against pre-colored margarine. Thus, in order to have margarine with the yellow color that is now so familiar, housewives (or their family members)had to put it there themselves. As I recall, the margarine came in blocks of one pound, not divided into quarters as we know it today. Inside the block was a color bubble. (I'm relying on memories from over 60 years ago on this, but that's how I remember it.) Someone in the family would have to squeeze the margarine until the color bubble was integrated into the entire block of margarine and the finished margarine was the desired yellow color. Does anyone else remember this far back? I believe the law against pre-colored margarine was repealed after the war and by 1951 it was legal. |

From the title I had no idea what this intel would be about. I turns out to be an awesome insight about the power of lobbyists and the way the legislative branch of our government works. Imagine banning yellow margarine!
