Almost Guilt-free Ways to Satisfy Your Sweet Tooth
By Barbara Radisavljevic of Barb's People Builders
Dessert! What picture comes into your mind when you hear that word? Is it a gooey chocolate cake with chocolate frosting? An ice-cream sundae? A banana split covered with toppings? Or maybe it's apple pie a la mode. Whatever you're imagining, your next thought might be how indulging yourself with your favorite dessert will add unhealthy pounds to your body. I'm sure you've heard the old saying that it's the calories that make foods taste good. But I've learned this summer that using a lot of fruit without wrapping it in a lot of sugar and fat can also satisfy that pesky sweet tooth. It's true that this is especially true in summer, but many sweet fruits are available all year. They can be just as tasty almost naked as when they are made into breads, cakes, and pies. In the heat of summer, when some of the sweetest, juiciest fruits mature, we often actually crave a perfect chilled tree-ripened peach or plum more than a peach pie or a plum cake. Why? Because when it's very hot, the extra sugar and fat may not be as appealing as it is in winter when we seem to need a few more calories. A bunch of sweet, cold grapes might even sound better. I have just come through a heat wave when the temperatures have soared to the triple digits and stayed there all week. Chocolate didn't tempt me nearly as much as that cold, sweet peach or a huge icy slab of red, ripe watermelon. Likewise, ice water was usually my beverage of choice. My husband thinks chilled bananas are as good as ice cream. And a pear that is at its mature best, but not too ripe stage, is exquisite alone or, maybe, with a ginger snap for a contrasting flavor. Another summer favorite is strawberries cut up over angel food cake chunks so that the low-fat cake soaks up the juices. I admit to topping this off with a scoop of low-fat ice cream or sherbet, but that's still a fairly light dessert. And if you let a persimmon ripen until it's very soft and chill it, you can eat it like ice cream right from its skin. It's very sweet. In the fall, we have apples. They are delicious just as they come off the tree. They are also tasty baked with cinnamon, a little brown sugar, and nuts. You can also use them in Waldorf salad, which also makes a good dessert. I cut up as many apples as I need to feed the people who will be eating. Then I add one stalk of celery and 1/4 cup coarsely chopped walnuts for each two apples I put in. For dressing I use lemon yogurt -- just enough to thinly coat the other ingredients when well mixed. To make it sweeter you can add some grapes or miniature marshmallows, but I don't. So when your sweet tooth demands satisfaction and your conscience tries to silence it, try fruit with as few embellishments as possible, for a delicious dessert. It will satisfy both your sweet tooth and your conscience. |

mmmmm mmmmm what a tasty intel. Good advice for us dessert loving Qondiors. We bought strawberries from the market yesterday. Ugh they were not very edible. Our patch looks lovely as it blossoms but it will be a while until we eat the produce.
